Spain Tops the List of Most Sought-After Destinations for UK Tourists
Spain is the most visited country by UK residents, the Office for National Statistics revealed today. Britons flock to the country in their droves, with 15.6 million visits there in 2018 - although this was a two percent decrease from 2017.
The majority of trips were for holidays, with 89 percent of Britons stepping on to Spanish soil to enjoy the sun, sea and sangria. Spain wasn’t the only European country to enjoy the patronage of British travelers.
France and Italy took second and third place respectively, showing Britons are still enjoying European culture despite opting to leave the EU.
Paris is set to become a must-visit once again, with new designs for the area around the Eiffel Tower released yesterday showing a stunning garden that is sure to tempt millions more to the French capital.
The rest of the top ten was dominated by Europe, with the USA being the only non-European destination to make the list in fourth place. Poland saw the largest change from 2017 to 2018, with a decline in visits of seven percent.
Away from the front runners, Turkey and Tunisia saw a recovery in tourism from the UK, with rises in the number of visitors.
Turkey enjoyed 1.4 million visits in 2018 (slightly up from 1.2 million), while Tunisia saw 170,000 visits - a small number as the country continues to try and attract Britons in the wake of the 2015 terror attack.
Australia, meanwhile, lost ground with a 21 percent decrease in Britons making the long journey down under.
