Charles “Bud” Darr has been appointed as the new president and CEO of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), effective February 3, 2025. He will take over from Kelly Craighead, who announced her decision to step down earlier this year.

Darr brings extensive maritime expertise to the role, having previously worked with CLIA from 2010 to 2017, where he spearheaded the Association’s maritime and regulatory initiatives. Most recently, he served as executive vice president of maritime policy and government affairs for MSC Group.

His career spans leadership roles with the U.S. Coast Guard, where he specialized in maritime law, and service with the U.S. Navy, Merchant Marine, and Coast Guard. His academic background includes a focus on Submarine Nuclear Engineering, a degree from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and legal studies at George Washington University.

Jason Liberty, CLIA’s Board Chairman, described Darr as the ideal choice to guide the association into a new era. “Bud’s leadership and deep understanding of maritime policies and environmental practices will drive innovation and help us reach ambitious goals,” said Liberty.

As CLIA’s president and CEO, Darr will oversee the global strategy, with a focus on achieving the cruise industry’s 2050 sustainability goals and furthering its commitment to environmental leadership.
