Cuba has long been known for producing quality doctors and providing excellent medical services, and as the government of President Raul Castro seeks to revive the island’s economy, it is turning to medical tourism as a revenue generator.

Health tourism is growing in Spain at a rate of 20% per year. It is estimated that the sector has brought more than 500 million euros into the country in 2015.

Local university, Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE), is launching the International Certified Medical Tourism Professional program.

The opening of the new Hospiten hospital in Jamaica was “largely driven by tourism interests,” according to Jamaica Tourism Minister Dr. Wykeham McNeill.
