The island nation of Antigua and Barbuda has officially assumed the rotating presidency of the Caribbean Tourism Organization, taking over leadership during a critical transitional phase for the regional travel economy.

The formal handover took place during the annual General Assembly proceedings hosted in Georgetown, Guyana, gathering high-level regional delegates ahead of industry-wide strategic summits.

The country's Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation, and Investment, Charles "Max" Fernandez, will step into the role of leadership heading the Council of Ministers and Commissioners of Tourism. In tandem with ministerial oversight, Colin James, chief executive officer of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, assumes the executive board presidency, succeeding outgoing director Andrea Franklin.

Under the newly inaugurated leadership team, the organization aims to accelerate the execution of its comprehensive Reimagine Plan, which prioritizes enhanced multi-destination cooperation and optimized regional supply chains.

Governance structures were further reinforced with representatives from the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, Sint Maarten, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and The Bahamas joining the newly constituted Executive Committee.

Industry analysts emphasize that the incoming administration inherits a mandate closely tied to advancing workforce professionalization, bolstering sustainable tourism frameworks, and deepening integration with secondary productive sectors like local agriculture and creative industries. Strengthening these cross-sector linkages is viewed as essential for retaining tourism revenues within local island economies while combating rising operational costs.

As regional stakeholders continue collaborative deliberations across the Caribbean basin, tourism leaders express confidence that Antigua and Barbuda will provide a steady, visionary compass.

Observers conclude that cohesive regional governance will prove decisive in ensuring the collective destination brand remains resilient against evolving global economic and environmental headwinds.
