Caribbean Sun Aims to Relaunch Operations
Caribbean Sun Airlines, which ceased scheduled operations on Jan. 31, 2007, may rise again. Caribbean Sun applied to the Department of Transportation on Jan. 21 for authority to launch scheduled and charter services in June, initially with one 164-passenger MD-82. No routes were named in the DOT filing.
The defunct carrier had been based in Fort Lauderdale and operated routes to the northern Caribbean from its San Juan hub. Its sister carrier, Antigua-based Caribbean Star, covered the southern Caribbean until it was absorbed by LIAT in November 2007.
Although the carrier had planned to relaunch service at the end of 2007 as a charter operator –complete with a new brand identity and strategy- the deal never panned out.
