Cuba Sets New Record Highs in Tourist Arrivals in 2011

Cuba is wrapping up the year 2011 with a new record of foreign tourist arrivals, figures that bear out how tourism has turned out to one of the main sources of hard currency income for the economy of the Caribbean nation.

A press release from the Cuban Tourism Ministry announced that visitor number 2,531,745 arrived in Cuba last Tuesday to set the new record for a year —an excellent reason to celebrate along with the fact that this Friday Varadero, in the central province of Matanzas, welcomed its one millionth visitor for the fourth straight year and one week earlier than in 2010.

The communiqué adds that Great Britain, Italy, Spain and Germany follow Canada as the island nation’s top outbound markets, while other nations have made significant headway. These include Argentina in Latin America and Russia in Europe.

“Receiving more than two million visitors shows our increasing competitiveness, which is based not only on the high quality and diversity of the Cuban tourist product, but also on the stability and security we offer to our clients, and also on the kindness and hospitality of our people,” the text reads.
