Dominica Picked as Test Site for New Port Management Technology
Dominica has been selected as a test site to assess the use of modern technology for port processes to improve trade in the region.
Tropical Shipping, a US-based company and the Caribbean Central America Action (CCAA) have been working closely with the local Port Authority, Customs and the Excise division to facilitate the project.
Jennifer Nugent-Hill, VP of Tropical Shipping, told a news conference that the object of improving technology will enable materials, goods and data to be moved in “real time.”
The project makes provision for customs and port authority to be equipped with support systems to include hardware and software technology, and training of personnel.
This will allow for the implementation of processes that will allow for electronic data exchange to be received and shared in real time to the appropriate government agencies, the media heard.
Although a budget has not yet been identified, the cost of the 12-month pilot project will be shared among the partners involved, according to the officials.
