Dominican Republic’s 2012 Air Arrivals Rise Nearly 6 Percent

The Dominican Republic’s seven international airports hosted 3.9 million visitors in 2012, compared to 3.7 million in 2011, a 5.9 percent increase, according to statistics from the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. Fifty-five percent of the visitors were from North America; a 10.3 percent increase compared with 2011.

Travelers from the United States totaled 1.4 million tourists, 37.6 percent of total 2012 airport visitors, while Canadian travelers totaled 689,000 tourists, or 17.5 percent of all visitors. Among other international source markets, Europe contributed the second-most visitors, 28 of the overall number of visitors, a 3 percent drop from previous years.

Conversely South America, the third-largest market at 11 percent of all visitors, is the fastest-growing, with 12 percent annual growth. Central America and the Caribbean contributed 5 percent of all arrivals, with average annual growth of four percent.
