For the first time ever, a national tourism board has been awarded a Green Globe for the green oriented content of its marketing. The German National Tourist Board (GNTB) was selected as an international role model for the way it markets sustainability in the destination.

Green Globe Certificates are awarded to organizations based on such things as waste and water management and energy utilization, but Green Globe’s independent auditors were exceptionally impressed with the GNTB’s “consistent emphasis of sustainability within its strategic activities.”

The GNTB also created a sustainability strategy that included communications, internal sustainable initiatives and even product development. An example of the GNTB’s efforts is the Green Meetings initiative.

“We have been promoting sustainability as a core marketing theme for travel destination Germany for many years and regard it as one of the principle responsibilities of our organization” says Petra Hedorfer, CEO German National Tourist Board (pictured above). “Our goal is the international positioning of Germany as a sustainable travel destination.”
