Mexico’s Cruise Industry Keeps Steaming Ahead
Mexican cruise numbers have skyrocketed over the last six years. According to The Riviera Maya Times, Princess Cruises Latin American director Ruth Leal announced the Mexican cruise industry saw a 52 percent increase in passenger arrivals and a 42 percent jump in the number of ships visiting the country.
In 2012, Mexico registered 4,772,000 cruise passengers, while the numbers skyrocketed to 7,256,000 in 201. As for 2018 projections, officials are expecting a 13-15 percent increase.
Data from the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine attached to the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation revealed a total of 1,743 vessels arrived at different Mexican ports in 2012. The numbers jumped to 2,446 in 2017, a 42.4 percent increase.
The information provided by the Mexican government indicated the Caribbean is the main area of world cruising, with 40 percent of all cruises sailing through the region. Data also showed the island of Cozumel is the most visited in the world by cruise ships.
Leal told The Riviera Maya Times the increase in cruise travel to Mexico was partially due to the low rates and enticing promotions offered by different cruise lines. She added cruising is also one of the most pleasant ways to travel the world.
