Mexico Riviera Resort Makes Great Strides in Sustainability
Karisma Hotels & Resorts, located along Mexico’s Riviera Maya, has taken significant steps to form their own sustainability culture among collaborators, guests, shareholders, and suppliers.
The hospitality group is working across the destination to encourage environmental awareness, while investing in community and people. Top performing Green Globe members for years, Karisma’s El Dorado Maroma and Azul Beach properties recently achieved re-certification.
2013 has been a year full of great CSR initiatives at Karisma, and the company formed five new strategic alliances with local public health centers at the Mayan Riviera. In collaboration with the regional authorities, the company organized a series of events to oppose the mistreatment and sexual exploitation of children and teenagers. Under this initiative, Karisma has established policies to work against this type of abuse.
The Karisma group is deeply immersed with the community, and likes to promote local Mayan products at each hotel. Pitahi Jungle Jams, made by Mayan entrepreneur women, as well as handicrafts made by local artisans are available to guests at the weekly Mexican markets. Throughout the year, furniture, linens, food, and many hours of volunteer work are donated to people in need all over the country.
