Over a Million Ticket Requests Received for Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Events

If ticket sales are any indication, the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro, are already shaping up as successful from a sporting perspective. One week after they went on sale, Brazilian fans have applied for 1.2 million tickets to game events, according to officials at Embratur, Brazil’s tourism agency.

Tickets to the games went on sale to Brazilian residents opened on March 31. Embratur has published a list of authorized ticket resellers through which U.S. resident and fans outside of Brazil can purchase tickets.

The most popular sports in terms of ticket requests have been volleyball, football and basketball. Brazilians who have filed requests now have until April 30 to apply on for tickets in the first draw, with the results announced in June. Those who entered the first draw will be able to apply in the second draw, which opens July. Second draw results will be announced in August.

Embratur officials say 7.5 million tickets will go on sale for the Rio Olympic Games, with more than half priced at $22 or less.
