The Spanish hotel firm Playa Hotels & Resorts is pumping $14 million into a renovation program at the Barceló Punta Cana Resort in the Dominican Republic.

The upgrade to the former Breezes Punta Cana includes the resort’s public spaces and guest rooms, which will be revamped to Barcelo’s premium level accommodations. All renovations will be completed by December in time for the holiday season, the company said.

Enhancements will include a renovation of the public walkways and spaces, the addition of a Club Premium arrival area, a second large pool and deck area, and a new Beach Grill restaurant.

Guestrooms will receive new soft goods and bedding and will feature a contemporary Caribbean theme with tropical colors, natural stones and spa-style bathrooms with walk-in showers and freestanding fixtures, according to the hotel company.

Playa Hotels & Resorts will upgrade the Barceló La Jolla de Mismaloya, a 304-unit, all-suite property in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Playa acquired the property in 2006.

The $7.2 million renovation plan will include the addition of a European-style spa, beach enhancements, and improvements to all guest rooms, all to be completed in time for the winter season.

The resort’s 179 one-bedroom suites will be redesigned into two-room suites, equipped with separate living and sleeping areas, both featuring sleeper couches to accommodate additional guests.

The hotel’s Presidential suites also will be redesigned with new decor and upgrades to the bathrooms; each suite will feature flat-screen TVs and high-speed Internet access.
