Puerto Rico Capital Prepares to Welcome Larger Cruise Ships
Puerto Rico will expand a cruise ship pier in the historic Old San Juan district to accommodate cruise ships capable of carrying more than 6,000 passengers, the country’s governor announced recently.
The $8.7 million project will extend the pier by 182 feet and build a new baggage inspection office, said Alejandro Garcia Padilla last week.
The longer pier will be able to accommodate large cruise ships including the Royal Caribbean Intl.’s Quantum of the Seas, which is slated to visit Puerto Rico for the first time in December 2014 and make nine more visits through 2015.
Cruise ship calls in Puerto Rico have generated more than $150 million so far this year, and visits by the largest cruise ships are expected to generate an additional $300 million in the next 10 years, said Padilla.
