Sports Tourism Unit Branches Out to Canada
There is no doubt that sports tourism is catching on in The Bahamas, as more and more teams come and compete in various events held every year. The growth has sparked officials in the Ministry of Tourism to look beyond the Caribbean and the United States of America (USA), branching out to Canada.
The increase in interest has been seen now that state-of-the-art facilities are in place and tournaments of a higher caliber are hosted by the various federations, said Tyrone Sawyer, director of sports tourism development in the Ministry of Tourism. Visitors now view The Bahamas as a sporting haven, something Sawyer will like to build on.
Just recently, he and members of the Bahamas Basketball Federation (BBF) were in discussions with executives of the Canadian Basketball Federation. It is their plan to include teams from Canada in tournaments like the Summer of Thunder, which is held in the months of June to September.
The interested teams and federations will have no difficulty corresponding with the local associations. He noted that the teams will find the staff at the Bahamas Tourist office in Canada very helpful and friendly.
Next year will be a busy one for sports tourism, as a number of events are scheduled. A list of these tournaments will be released by the Ministry of Tourism.
