St Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Minister had called on Caribbean governments to invest in the region’s carriers instead of subsidizing international airlines.
Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has announced it is offering a daily nonstop service from its Fort Lauderdale base to Bogota, Colombia, starting 24 July. The new route will be operated by Spirit’s new Airbus fleet, the youngest in the Americas.
Southwest Airlines has announced that the carrier will utilize a brand new optimization model to add service in select markets and tweak its schedule. Through the elimination of 31 existing roundtrip flights from its current flight schedule, Southwest has added 40 new roundtrip flights in key growth cities such as Denver and Ft. Lauderdale and Hollywood.
WestJet today announced the introduction of seasonal nonstop service to two new international sun destinations in the Caribbean: Bridgetown, Barbados and La Romana, Dominican Republic.
Lufthansa and United Airlines have combined their individual corporate incentive programs to create a single joint program under United’s PerksPlus brand. Lufthansa’s previous “Corporate Mileage Plan” members and United’s PerksPlus participants will now have access to more benefits across a wider, global network.
The international crisis of the airlines, which has prompted layoffs in different carriers, less air routes and higher airfares, “cause neither a reduction of flights nor seats in Dominican tourism, nor in regular flights, nor will run over the passenger who travels from the U.S. to the country”, said Dominican Civil Aviation director Jose Tomas Perez.
