Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova expressed alarm at reports of the systematic persecution of, and attacks on the vulnerable Christian, Turkmen, and Yazidi communities in the north of Iraq, and its cultural and religious heritage, notably churches, shrines and monuments.
