With 37 years of service under his belt for Alitalia, Salvatore Avaro is a deep connoisseur of the policies in both the company and the sector. His tenure at Eurofly –a charter group owned by Alitalia- and his experience as director of Customer Services in the KLM-Alitalia joint venture provide him with a global outlook of the sector’s situation, allowing him to implement and develop new marketing policies in his new stint. To begin with, can you tell us briefly about your professional career in the realm of tourism? How long have you been in Spanair?
I joined Spanair in October 2000, at the request of its front office, to support and execute the strategy of Commercial Alliances and other projects linked to Spanair’s growth and evolution as a top-rated airline with a global profile.
Before this magnificent opportunity came my way, I worked for United Airlines in different areas such as operational planning, passenger services, marketing, plus a last stint as head of Commercial Alliance programs for Europe and Latin America. I’ve been linked to the sector since 1986, serving in different international airlines.

The new brand is one of the trademarks owned by Cubanacan Hotels.

Mexican-born Gutierrez Niebla, up to now at the helm of the CONPEHT gathering 70 institutions in 21 countries, warned about the shortage of resources in tourism education due to the lack of trained teachers. Roughly 80% of tourism-related professors in Latin America are honorary people who come and go teaching on techniques and giving topic updates on the sector, yet they don’t have a methodological formation.
