The Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau announced that Cancun had one of the best summer seasons in recent years with an approximate 88 percent hotel occupancy rate. Cancun International Airport received more than 7.4 million tourists, compared to 6.8 million who visited during the same time last year.

Gloria Guevara, secretary of tourism for Mexico, speaking at Virtuoso Travel Week in Las Vegas, said her country was putting more emphasis in its promotions on the luxury market.
In order to accomplish that, the country is developing programs with Virtuoso and other high-end groups.

Jamaica is one of 10 participating states in a project aimed at developing a regional monitoring and evaluation framework for the tourism sector in the Caribbean, contributing to the goal of reducing vulnerability.

Mexico’s tourism activity grew 3.9 percent in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2011, thanks to strong demand for tourist services, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, or INEGI, said last week. Tourism accounts for about 8% Mexico’s GDP.
