The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) has announced the appointment of Narendra Ramgulam of Trinidad and Tobago as its new Deputy Director of Sustainable Tourism, a key leadership position newly created to support the region’s strategic emphasis on sustainable and regenerative tourism development.

Ramgulam, who joined the CTO last year as a Sustainable Tourism Consultant, has played a pivotal role in advancing the organization’s commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainability-focused tourism sector. His appointment, recently approved by the CTO’s Board of Directors, signals a major step in the implementation of the CTO’s Reimagine Plan.

“We are pleased to welcome Narendra to this new leadership role,” said Dona Regis-Prosper, Secretary-General of the CTO. “His contributions over the past year have been instrumental, and we are confident that his expertise, innovation and deep passion for sustainability will continue to elevate our work across the region.”

In this new capacity, Ramgulam will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic sustainability initiatives across the Caribbean. His work will focus on regional policy development, capacity building for stakeholders, the promotion of best practices, and the evaluation of sustainability programs within member countries.

Ramgulam brings extensive academic and professional credentials to the post. A prolific researcher with 13 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, he previously served as Director of Tourism Product Development & Destination Management at the Tobago Tourism Agency Limited. Under his leadership, Tobago earned multiple sustainability accolades and was recognized for its strong safety record during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also held an academic post as Postgraduate Coordinator and Lecturer at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus.

Ramgulam will officially take on his new role in mid-August and will be based at CTO Headquarters in Barbados. His appointment reinforces the CTO’s long-term vision to position the Caribbean as a global model for sustainable tourism leadership.
