Iberia Plans Special Flight to Observe Total Solar Eclipse from Cruising Altitude

Iberia has officially announced plans to operate a specialized commercial flight designed to offer passengers and global spectators an unprecedented view of the upcoming total solar eclipse. The historic mission combines advanced commercial aviation with specialized scientific research above standard cloud layers.

The flight will be operated using a modern Airbus A321XLR aircraft, scheduled to depart from Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport along a route specifically optimized to intercept the path of totality over northern Spain. Designated under the flight code IB1473 in honor of astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, the journey aims to maximize viewing clarity free from terrestrial atmospheric interference.

In addition to carrying aviation passengers, the aircraft will serve as an airborne laboratory in collaboration with the Shelios Project, led by astronomers from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. Researchers on board will conduct critical measurements of the solar corona while taking advantage of stable cruising conditions.

The airline confirmed that the entire astronomical event will be broadcast in real-time across its digital media channels. This live streaming capability is powered by high-speed satellite connectivity technology currently being integrated throughout the carrier's fleet.
