Puerto Rico Launches New Cruise Port Expansion in San Juan

Puerto Rico has officially launched a major expansion project for the San Juan Cruise Port, aiming to increase capacity and attract larger vessels from leading cruise lines. The $450 million project includes modernized terminals, advanced security systems, and improved passenger facilities.
Tourism authorities said the expansion will strengthen San Juan’s position as the Caribbean’s premier cruise gateway, with the ability to handle up to three Oasis-class ships simultaneously. This move responds to the growing demand for cruise itineraries in the region.
The government emphasized that the project will generate thousands of jobs in construction, hospitality, and port services, while significantly boosting tourism revenue for local businesses. Shops, restaurants, and tour operators are expected to benefit from the increased passenger flow.
Environmental considerations have also been incorporated, with investments in shore power systems to reduce emissions and improve sustainability. This aligns with Puerto Rico’s broader strategy to promote green tourism.
Cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean and MSC have already expressed interest in adding San Juan as a turnaround port, which would mean longer stays and higher economic impact.
The project marks a milestone in Puerto Rico’s recovery strategy, reinforcing its role as a central hub for Caribbean cruising.
