Jamaica has inaugurated the newly expanded terminal at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, a move designed to accommodate rising passenger traffic and solidify the country’s role as a major Caribbean hub. The expansion adds new check-in counters, modern security facilities, and an upgraded departure lounge.

Tourism authorities said the project was necessary to handle the surge in arrivals from the United States, Canada, and Europe, which account for the majority of Jamaica’s visitors. Last year, Jamaica welcomed over 4.5 million tourists, and officials project even stronger growth in 2026.

The expansion was carried out with sustainability in mind, featuring solar panels, water recycling systems, and energy-efficient lighting. According to airport operators, these measures are expected to reduce operating costs and align with Jamaica’s broader green tourism strategy.

Local businesses are optimistic that the enhanced airport will increase tourism spending. Hoteliers, tour operators, and transport providers anticipate that smoother passenger flow will encourage longer stays and higher visitor satisfaction.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness stated that the airport development represents a critical investment in Jamaica’s economic future, ensuring that the tourism sector remains competitive.

By modernizing its busiest airport, Jamaica strengthens its position as a top Caribbean destination, catering to both leisure travelers and business visitors.
