The Miami Beach Convention Center (MBCC) has been officially recognized as a Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This designation highlights the center's dedication to improving accessibility and support for autistic visitors.

The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) previously achieved CAC status, setting the stage for MBCC’s certification. The process involved comprehensive training from the Oak View Group, an expert in space development and management, to equip staff with the necessary skills to assist autistic individuals. Additionally, IBCCES conducted an audit to review improvements and provide further recommendations.

Freddie Peterson, CEO of the MBCC, expressed pride in the achievement: “I am very proud of our staff’s dedication and accomplishments. Our collaboration with the GMCVB was crucial in securing this certification, which underscores our commitment to inclusion and sets a new benchmark for accessibility in the events industry.”

The Miami Beach Convention Center has long prioritized Corporate Social Responsibility. During its $640 million expansion and renovation, the center achieved several significant certifications. It earned the LEED® Silver certification for sustainable buildings from the US Green Building Council (USGBC), indicating leadership in energy efficiency and sustainable design. Additionally, it received the Foundations Certificate for Sustainability and Social Impact from the Events Industry Council (EIC) and the Sustainable Event Professional Certificate for five staff members, focusing on sustainability and social impact in the events sector.

The MBCC also offers extensive accessibility features, including compliant parking, ramps, bathrooms, elevators, and automatic entrance doors. The facility adheres to the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards and provides Braille signage and a visual interpretation service through the Aira app.

David Whitaker, president of the GMCVB, emphasized the importance of this certification: “Inclusion and accessibility are top priorities for our destination. This latest certification is a vital step in our broader initiative to achieve city-wide certification. We aim to have numerous hotels, attractions, and entertainment venues across Miami prepared to welcome and serve our diverse community of travelers.”

Myron Pincomb, president of IBCCES, highlighted the impact of the certification: “One in six people is neurodivergent. By earning the Certified Autism Center™ designation, the Miami Beach Convention Center joins a growing number of organizations making significant strides in accessibility. This move reflects their commitment and leadership in the industry.”

For over 20 years, IBCCES has been at the forefront of autism and neurodiversity training and certification across various sectors, including health, education, and business. Their programs are designed to educate staff and enhance service for the neurodiverse community. IBCCES also offers AutismTravel.com and CertifiedAutismCenter.com, free online resources that list certified locations and professionals.
