In a groundbreaking move for the aviation industry, The New Terminal One at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) has partnered with TCR, a global leader in ground support equipment (GSE) solutions, to introduce the world’s first centralized all-electric GSE fleet. This innovative fleet will support the terminal’s operations when it opens in 2026 and represents a significant leap toward environmental sustainability.

A Shared All-Electric GSE Fleet: A World First

The all-electric GSE fleet at The New Terminal One will be shared among ground handling companies, breaking from the traditional model where individual handlers own or lease their equipment. This centralized approach optimizes equipment usage, reduces costs, and minimizes environmental impact.

Jennifer Aument, CEO of The New Terminal One, emphasized the terminal's dual commitment to creating a superior travel experience and achieving sustainability goals. "Partnering with TCR on this innovative collaboration will ensure seamless operations for our partner airlines and deliver a best-in-class experience for their customers," she stated.

Key Sustainability and Operational Benefits

The electric GSE pooling model aligns with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s ambitious goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its facilities by 2050. The initiative also supports the $19 billion transformation of JFK Airport into a world-class gateway, which includes new terminals, modernized facilities, and streamlined transportation networks.

Advantages of the electric GSE pooling model include:

  • Reduced emissions: The electric fleet eliminates tailpipe emissions, improving air quality.
  • Cost efficiency: Shared equipment minimizes redundancies and lowers operational costs.
  • Energy savings: Electric GSE reduces overall energy consumption.

The fleet will also feature advanced management technology for real-time monitoring, improving operational safety and decision-making.

Economic and Community Impact

The collaboration with TCR is expected to create approximately 50 local jobs, including roles for electric GSE maintenance technicians, and contribute to workforce diversity. TCR's commitment to the Port Authority’s Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE) participation targets further highlights its dedication to community engagement.

Kristof Philips, CEO of TCR Airport Solutions, expressed pride in supporting this innovative project. "This initiative sets a new global standard for sustainability in aviation," he said.

A Game-Changer for Ground Handlers

The pooling model will simplify operations for ground handlers by removing the need to purchase or lease equipment. Instead, handlers will only provide manpower to operate the GSE. A request for proposals for ground handlers at The New Terminal One is expected to be issued soon.

With this project, The New Terminal One at JFK is setting a global precedent for sustainable and efficient airport operations, paving the way for the future of aviation.
