The main terminal expansion at Portland International Airport (PDX) officially opened on August 14. This $2 billion project, designed by ZGF for the Port of Portland, is the largest mass timber development of its kind. Spanning one million square feet, the expansion doubles the airport's capacity and aims to accommodate up to 35 million passengers annually by 2045.

The new terminal features a 9-acre mass timber roof, creating an immersive Pacific Northwest forest ambiance with abundant natural light and views of the airfield. The design incorporates intimate plazas, tree-lined retail areas, and plant-filled spaces, reflecting Portland’s pedestrian-friendly streets and natural beauty.

The project was executed in phases over five years, allowing the airport to remain operational and achieve significant time and carbon savings. The mass timber roof, made from locally sourced wood, highlights Oregon's history of forest product innovation and sets a new standard for sustainable airport design.

The expanded terminal reduces energy use per square foot by 50% and includes resilient design features to withstand a 9.0 magnitude earthquake. A second phase of the project, expected to complete in early 2026, will add more retail and dining options and additional exit lanes.
