Lightning Strike Kills a Woman in Florida

A woman died after being struck by lightning Friday evening in Daytona Beach Shores, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The 33-year-old woman was wading in ankle-deep water with a man just before 5 p.m. when they were both struck, Volusia County Beach Safety Capt. Tamra Marris told the newspaper.

Marris told the Sentinel that “a bolt of lightning came out of nowhere." He said storms were off in the distance at the time.

The woman died around midnight, but officials have not released the man’s condition, Marris told the newspaper.

A 55-year-old Daytona Beach woman was also struck and "was able to walk away and seek medical attention elsewhere," Marris told the Sentinel.

The victims’ names are not being released until all family members are notified, officials told the Sentinel.

Others who were on the beach at the time told Fox 35 Orlando that they could feel a vibration when the bolt of lightning hit.

“It was extremely loud,” beachgoer Tim Heaton told Fox 35. “You can’t describe it because you could feel it all over your body.”
