Lufthansa Agrees on Pay Deal for 30,000 Ground Staff

Lufthansa has agreed to a pay deal with its 30,000 ground staff with a hope to avoid further strikes. The deal has been struck with the service sector union, Verdi which has been promised pay rise of 2.2 per cent, €2,250 (£1,580).

The Lufthansa airport staff and the catering, IT freight and maintenance workers are being covered in the rise.

A member of the Lufthansa executive board Dr. Bettina Volkens, said that the deal would create harmony between the bargaining parties. However an agreement between the airline and the Cabin crew and pilots is still waiting, despite the weeklong industrial action in November.

The airline is dealing with consistent strikes and with the longest strike affecting 500,000 passengers. The pay and pension dispute has been continuing for long. The carrier is cutting cost to compete with budget and Gulf carriers which is directly affecting its staff.

The company will be holding talks with the UFO and cockpit pilots’ union and Verdi to come to a conclusion on the long dispute. The staff has decided not to go on strikes, till Wednesday, 2.2.15 which will be a deciding day for the airline and its staff.
