This year, Macau saw two major hotel openings. Wynn Encore Tower opened in April and Mandarin Oriental Macau opened in June. Macau is now home to 93 hotels, with a total of 20,963 rooms. In early 2011, the Galaxy Macau will open with more than 2,200 five-star luxury hotel rooms. Themed around the concept of a “Mystical Oasis,” it will include Galaxy’s own 1,500-room hotel, Hotel Okura’s 500-room property, and Banyan Tree Macau’s 250 suites and 10 villas.

Also opening in the second half of 2011 will be the Shangri-La Hotel Macau and the Traders Hotel Macau. The 638-room Shangri-La hotel and 1,223-room Traders Hotel will occupy a 40-story building, designed by leading U.S. and Asia architects and designers.

Sheraton Macau, like the Shangri-La and Traders hotels, is being built by Las Vegas Sands Corp. and will open on Nov. 1, 2011. The property will be the biggest hotel in the world, with twin towers housing over 4,000 rooms, seven restaurants and lounges, over 271,000 square feet of meeting space, two health clubs, a spa, and three outdoor swimming pools. All properties will be located in the COTAI area.
