Malaysia Tourism Promotion Highlights Local Cuisine

A three-month food drive by the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia and Tourism Malaysia, the first annual “Fabulous Food 1Malaysia” aims to celebrate and promote Malaysia’s local cuisine with a series of activities. “Fabulous Food 1Malaysia celebrates the diverse Malaysian culinary that so aptly conveys the rich cultural tapestry of Malaysia,” said Malaysian Minister of Tourism Yang Berhormat Dato Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen at the recent “Fabulous Food 1Malaysia” logo launch.

The three-month drive, which kicked off recently with the Malaysian International Gourmet Food Festival, will also include the promotion of shopping mall food court dishes. Additionally, the ASEAN Heritage Food Trail with Malaysian celebrity chef, Chef Wan will be launched in conjunction with the event.

Throughout the event, which runs until the end of November, foreign visitors and Malaysians alike have the opportunity to savor food from ASEAN 10 countries. Chefs from various countries will cook up their respective signature dishes at Malaysia’s Lot 10 and Avenue K shopping malls. Participating countries include Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia as well as Malaysia.

As a platform for food outlets to showcase their signature dishes and help visitors navigate their way through the local Malaysian food maze, the participating Malaysian food associations will post a list of the “10 Best” or “Must Try” outlets from each of Malaysia’s 13 states in three different categories. The three categories are: Nasi Lemak, Laksa and Bak Kut Teh (Meat Bone Tea).

The Ministry of Tourism Malaysia will roll out different initiatives to encourage its residents to serve as the country’s “Food Ambassadors.” One of these initiatives will include targeting Malaysian taxi drivers who themselves know the best places to eat within the country.
