Mexico’s New Tourism Minister to Shine a Light on Cultural Tourism

Gloria Guevara, appearing here at Tianguis after just weeks of her appointment as Mexico’s new tourism minister, unveiled a series of initiatives to promote Mexico’s historical and cultural areas, which, she said, the country has not taken advantage of.

“Mexico is a country of incredible and unequal beauty” and is a destination with more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any country in Latin America, she said.

To promote the destinations that offer visitors the country’s history and culture, Guevara said the ministry of tourism would hold its first Cultural Tourism Conference in Morelia later this year.

The dates of the conference have not been set, but a spokeswoman for the Mexico Tourism Board said the event is designed for tour operators, travel journalists and anyone interested in Mexico’s opportunities for cultural tourism.

Guevara said the ministry would also work to create 10 cultural, historical and gastronomical itineraries of Mexico. Her aim, she said, is to present the itineraries in an “organized and straightforward manner” as is done by European tourist boards.
