Norwegian Cruise Line Names Pitbull Godfather of Norwegian Escape

Norwegian Cruise Line announced Tuesday that the famous Miami native will be named the godfather of the company's newest ship, the Norwegian Escape.

The ceremony, which will be attended by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. CEO Frank Del Rio and Norwegian President Andy Stuart, will take place Nov. 9 during the ship's christening at PortMiami.

In addition to serving as the honorary godfather, Pitbull will headline the ceremony with a musical performance.

The 34-year-old musician and performer, whose real name is Armando Perez, is no stranger to Norwegian. He's served previous roles for the cruise line in recent years, entertaining the crowd during the Norwegian Getaway's February 2014 christening ceremony and lending his signature Voli vodka brand to the cruise line's fleetwide cocktail menu.

"Pitbull has been an excellent partner and great friend to Norwegian Cruise Line," Stuart said in a statement. "A Miami native, he epitomizes and contributes to the energy, excitement and local flavor that our ships so proudly embody, and we’re excited to build upon our relationship and have him serve in this special role as Godfather to Norwegian Escape."

Once it embarks on its maiden voyage on Nov. 14, the 4,200-passenger Norwegian Escape will be the largest vessel to homeport year-round out of Miami.

Construction on the Norwegian Escape is being finalized at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.

Once in service next month, the ship will sail seven-day cruises from Miami to the Eastern Caribbean, visiting ports in popular destinations including St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; and Nassau, Bahamas.
