A Recipe to Make Your Own Rum at the Excelencias Gourmet Seminar

Drinking rum in Cuba is quite usual, enjoying it, calmly tasting it, even with devotion. It’s almost a ritual in certain contexts. But learning how to make it, hearing secrets and ways to do from the horse’s mouth, is a privilege instead of a challenge.
That’s the driving force behind the success of “Make Your Own Rum” workshop tasting and pairing with Cuaba habanos, chaired by Cuban Master Rum Maker Asbel Morales and world habanosommelier champion Juan Jesus Machin, during the second day of the 6th Excelencias Gourmet International Gastronomic Seminar.
Master Asbel Morales talked about the three key elements to make Havana Club rum so special: the origin of the raw materials, distinctive techniques and products, and the natural aging process carried out by the Master Rum Maker.
After a detailed explanation, Mr. Morales led the making workshop, when the attendees could create their own Selección de Maestros rum, guided by the expert, who shared tips, but let participants run their own experiments to find their blend.
Once the “new” Selección de Maestros was created, Mr. Machin came into scene and explained the origin of Cuban tobacco and the creation of habanos, while discoursing on the characteristics of each habano tasted in the session.
