Tourists Killed during Bus Accident in Japan

At least 14 people were killed Thursday in Japan when a bus carrying tourists to a local ski resort drove off the road and into a wooded area.

According to RT.com, the bus was traveling to a resort in Nagano, Japan, when it crossed into oncoming traffic and drove through a guardrail before falling into a lower area full of trees near the town of Karuizawa.

Reports indicate almost 40 people were on the bus when it crashed, and at least 25 were transported to local hospitals, with 19 currently still in medical facilities recovering from serious injuries.

While the cause of the deadly crash was not immediately clear to investigators, local authorities are reporting that there was no ice on the road at the time of the accident.

Many of the tourists on the bus were reportedly traveling as part of a Tokyo travel agency’s ski tour package, according to media outlets in Japan. The group of tourists left Tokyo’s Harajuku district Thursday night and were en route to Nagano when the crash occurred.
