United to Charge for Second Checked Bag on International Routes

United matched competitors by implementing a $50 fee for a second checked bag on flights between the U.S. and Europe.

The fee applies to economy tickets purchased on or after Sept. 30 for travel starting Dec. 15. If travelers pay online, they save $5.

Also beginning with flights on Dec. 15 for coach tickets bought on or after Sept. 30, United will charge $30 for a second checked bag on flights to Mexico and Caribbean islands that are not U.S. territories. Those paying the fee at United.com will pay $27.
