The man who originated the concept of geotourism, Jonathan Tourtellot, has said that the Caribbean tourism product will be a lot more competitive if its social fabric, ecology, architecture, cuisine, natural beauty, and its heritage are protected. Geotourism is described as “best practice” tourism that sustains, or even enhances, the geographical character of a place, such as its culture, environment, heritage, and the well-being of its residents.
Romania’s ministry for regional development and tourism has approved a special budget of 5 million euros ($6.8 million) for promotion. Extra funding is to go in particular into expanding the country’s presence at major international travel trade fairs.
Although the economic downturn also affected Serbia, the country was alone among European destinations in reporting growth in incoming tourism with international arrivals expanding by no less than 2 percent. VisitEngland CEO James Berresford traveled to New York City on Feb. 16 to announce and celebrate the official launch of VisitEngland in North America. Having launched in the U.K. in April 2009, the official tourism body for England is now expanding its network of global PR representation to include the U.S and Canada with the goal of increasing travel throughout England from the North American market.
