OpenAI, PayPal Partner to Bring Instant Checkout to ChatGPT
OpenAI and PayPal announced a strategic partnership to enable instant checkout and expanded commerce capabilities within ChatGPT. Through the collaboration, millions of ChatGPT users will be able to complete purchases seamlessly using PayPal, while the platform will also support payments processing for merchants leveraging OpenAI Instant Checkout.
Alex Chriss, President and CEO of PayPal, highlighted the potential impact of the partnership: “Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop. By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps.”
The integration leverages PayPal’s wallet, offering multiple funding options such as bank accounts, balances, and cards, along with buyer and seller protections, tracking, and dispute resolution. Consumers will now enjoy a secure and streamlined purchasing experience directly within ChatGPT without leaving the conversation interface.
For merchants, the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) opens new possibilities. In 2026, PayPal will make the product catalogs of millions of small businesses, as well as major retail brands across fashion, beauty, electronics, and home improvement, discoverable and purchasable through ChatGPT. PayPal will manage merchant routing, payment validation, and orchestration, eliminating the need for individual integrations.
The partnership also extends beyond commerce, allowing PayPal to scale AI access internally. Over 24,000 PayPal employees will leverage ChatGPT Enterprise, while engineers gain enhanced capabilities through OpenAI’s Codex, enabling faster product development and innovation across PayPal services.
This move positions ChatGPT as a hub for agentic commerce, where AI can assist users not just with information but with actionable purchasing solutions. By combining OpenAI’s conversational intelligence with PayPal’s payments infrastructure, the platform aims to create a frictionless pathway from discovery to checkout.
As this integration rolls out, both companies expect to enhance the user experience while providing merchants with a scalable, compliant, and global sales channel.
