Colombia Tops Global Bird Count, Sets New Tourism Records

Colombia has reaffirmed its global leadership in biodiversity and nature tourism by ranking first once again in the Global Big Day 2025, the world’s largest birdwatching event. With an impressive 1,563 bird species recorded, the country outperformed all others, including Peru and Brazil, solidifying its reputation as the most biodiverse nation on Earth for birds.
This milestone coincides with a historic rise in international tourism. In 2024, Colombia welcomed more than 6.9 million visitors, setting a national record. The United States remains the top source of inbound travelers, positioning Colombia as the number one South American destination for U.S. tourists.
Organized by the global platform eBird, the Global Big Day is celebrated in over 200 countries, engaging birders, scientists, and local communities around World Migratory Bird Day. Colombia’s diverse landscapes — from the Amazon and Orinoco to the Pacific Coast — were key contributors to this success, offering unmatched ecosystems for spotting rare and endemic species.
"This achievement affirms our extraordinary natural wealth and our commitment to sustainability," said Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia. She highlighted how birdwatching has evolved into a powerful tool for sustainable development and a unique way to share Colombia’s beauty with the world.
With over 1,900 bird species, including 79 endemics, and a prime location on key migratory routes, Colombia has become a global hotspot for birders. Through ProColombia, the country has invested in birding routes, eco-lodges, and international promotion efforts such as the Global Bird Fair and familiarization trips with tour operators from the U.S. and U.K.
This strategic approach is creating real impact. Birdwatching is now a growing economic force in Colombia, bringing benefits to local communities while fostering conservation. Visitors are increasingly drawn not only by the country’s vibrant avian life but also by its diverse landscapes, rich culture, and hospitality — making Colombia a true leader in nature-based tourism.
