This fall, Visit Montana is inviting travelers to embrace the concept of "slow travel" and delve into the state's lesser-known corners. With new itineraries and interactive maps, visitors can enjoy an affordable and immersive road trip experience through Montana's scenic landscapes, quaint small towns, and uncrowded destinations.

Montana's fall offerings include a variety of seasonal activities and attractions:

  • Wildlife Viewing and Salmon Fishing in Missouri River Country: Experience the thrill of fishing for Chinook salmon and observing elk in their natural habitat around Fort Peck Lake, a prime location for nature enthusiasts.

  • Explore Ghost Towns in Southwest Montana: Step back in time by visiting historic sites like Bannack State Park and Garnet Ghost Town, where the legacy of Montana’s gold rush era is preserved in abandoned mining towns.

  • Bison Viewing at the Bison Range: Managed by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT), this range offers opportunities to see bison and other wildlife, including elk and pronghorn, through hiking trails and scenic drives.

  • Inaugural Livingston Songwriter Festival: On October 4-5, Livingston will host its first songwriter festival featuring performances by artists from Nashville and Montana, filling the city’s venues with music and creativity.

  • Stargazing in Southeast Montana: Visit Medicine Rocks State Park, an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, for some of the best stargazing in the state. This remote park offers a stunning view of the night sky against the backdrop of Montana’s eastern prairies.

  • Fall Colors in the Bob Marshall Wilderness: Enjoy the vibrant fall foliage of one of the largest wilderness areas in the lower 48 states with guided adventures starting from the charming town of Choteau.

Visit Montana’s updated campaign, "That's How You Montana," features detailed road trip itineraries, interactive maps, and expanded website content to help travelers discover the state's hidden gems and embrace a slower-paced, more immersive travel experience.

Paul Green, director of the Montana Department of Commerce, encourages visitors to explore beyond the main roads. "Montana is home to incredible state parks and rural communities that are ready to welcome you. We invite travelers to take their time and experience the unique charm of every corner of our state this fall."

Highlights from Visit Montana’s new road trip itineraries include:

  • 3 Days in Central Montana: Enjoy horseback riding in the Bob Marshall Wilderness or visit Choteau's Old Trail Museum, part of the Montana Dinosaur Trail.

  • 5 Days in Eastern Montana: Explore Lookout Cave and its preserved pictographs or take a guided boat tour on Fort Peck Lake.

  • 4 Days in Northwest Montana: Visit the Lincoln Ranger District Visitor Center to see a giant grizzly bear display or explore the Kootenai National Forest.

  • 4 Days West to East: Discover the history of the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, dine at The Jawbone, and relax at the Hot Springs Motel in White Sulphur Springs.
