Fall Travel Kicks Off with 7.4 Million Americans RVing Over Labor Day

More than 7.4 million Americans will hit the road in an RV over Labor Day Weekend, according to the latest Fall Travel Intention Survey from the RV Industry Association (RVIA). The figure marks an increase over 2024, reinforcing RVing’s status as one of the most popular ways to explore the country during the autumn season.
Survey results show that affordability is the top reason travelers are choosing RV trips this fall, with 60% of respondents highlighting it as a deciding factor. Other major motivations include enjoying the RV lifestyle and escaping the stresses of everyday life. “RV travel continues to offer comfort, affordability, and a direct connection to the outdoors that make it stand out as the premier way to experience autumn across America,” said Monika Geraci, RVIA spokesperson.
The survey also revealed shifts in trip planning habits. About 32% of leisure travelers expect to use AI tools to design their itineraries, though websites, social media, and apps remain integral resources. Nearly half of RVers (46%) plan to make the road trip itself their destination, while others focus on national and state parks, beaches, festivals, fairs, concerts, and theme parks. The Northeast was singled out as a top region for fall RV travel, thanks to its leaf-peeping opportunities.
Economic factors are also driving interest in RV travel. Nearly half (47%) of RVers cited economic uncertainty as a reason for choosing RVs this fall, up significantly from 33% in the summer. At the same time, interest in RV ownership continues to rise, particularly among Millennials and Gen Z, who registered a 16% year-over-year increase in purchase intent.
Shorter getaways remain popular, with most RVers planning trips within a four- to seven-hour drive from home. Lifestyle preferences are also shaping travel: 72% of RVers intend to bring their pets along, and an increasing number plan to work remotely from the road, blending leisure with productivity.
With comfort, flexibility, and outdoor access at the forefront, RVing is set to play a major role in shaping fall travel trends across the United States in 2025.
