Egypt's Travel & Tourism sector has reached new historic milestones, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). The organization’s latest Economic Impact Research (EIR), produced in collaboration with Oxford Economics, reveals that 2024 marked the highest-ever contribution of the sector to the country’s economy, with 2025 expected to break even more records.

In 2024, the sector contributed EGP 1.4 trillion to Egypt’s GDP, representing 8.5% of the national economy. With a projected 4.9% annual growth in 2025, that figure is expected to rise further, pushing the sector’s share of GDP to 8.6%, highlighting the central role Travel & Tourism plays in Egypt’s economic development.

Visitor spending has also surged. International visitor expenditure reached EGP 726.9 billion in 2024, up 36.1% compared to 2019, while domestic spending climbed to EGP 449.9 billion, a 31.8% increase over pre-pandemic levels. In 2025, these numbers are expected to grow to EGP 768.2 billion for international visitors and EGP 460.6 billion for domestic travelers, reflecting strong demand across both markets.

Employment in the sector has surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with 2.7 million jobs supported in 2024, and a forecast of 2.9 million in 2025, representing a 22.3% increase compared to 2019. This underscores Travel & Tourism’s growing impact as a job-creating engine for the country.

WTTC President & CEO Julia Simpson praised Egypt’s resurgence, stating: “These numbers reflect a sector on the rise: dynamic, resilient, and vital to the country’s growth. With its rich cultural heritage, world-class attractions, and growing connectivity, Egypt continues to captivate travellers from around the globe.”

Looking further ahead, WTTC forecasts that by 2035, the sector will contribute EGP 2.1 trillion to the economy, account for 8.4% of GDP, and support 3.8 million jobs10.5% of total national employment. International spending is expected to reach EGP 1.1 trillion, with domestic travel hitting EGP 627 billion, cementing Egypt’s potential as one of the region’s leading sustainable tourism destinations.
