WTTC: Tourism Must Not Be Scapegoated for Broader Issues

In response to recent anti-tourism protests in several destinations, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has issued an official statement defending the positive impact of the Travel & Tourism sector and urging constructive dialogue between governments and communities.
WTTC emphasized that Travel & Tourism is a powerful driver of economic growth, providing significant benefits not only to major industry players but also to local businesses, entrepreneurs, and small suppliers who depend on visitor spending for their livelihoods.
The organization also highlighted the sector’s vital role in job creation and the generation of public revenue through both international and domestic tourism. These contributions, it stressed, support national economies and fund essential services.
WTTC cautioned against blaming the tourism industry for complex challenges such as housing shortages, which, the Council noted, are often rooted in deeper, structural issues beyond the control of the travel sector.
“Travel & Tourism generates substantial tax revenues,” the statement reads. “Governments must work with local communities to ensure these funds are reinvested effectively—particularly in infrastructure and services that benefit both residents and visitors.”
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism practices and expressed its willingness to collaborate with authorities to ensure that tourism continues to be a force for inclusive development, community well-being, and shared prosperity.
