Passenger Traffic in Latin America and the Caribbean to Grow by 8.4% in 2023

Airports Council International (ACI) has released the Annual Report on World Airport Traffic 2024, showing significant growth in global airport traffic for 2023. The report, based on data from ACI's global network and civil aviation bodies, highlights an impressive recovery in passenger traffic following the pandemic, with global figures approaching 8.7 billion—a 30.6% increase from the previous year.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, passenger traffic reached over 732.4 million, reflecting an 8.4% share of global traffic and a 12.7% annual growth. Air cargo saw 5.8 million tons handled, growing 1.3% and accounting for 5.1% of global air cargo traffic.
Dr. Rafael Echevarne, Director General of ACI-LAC, noted that major markets in the region, such as Brazil and Mexico, have surpassed pre-pandemic levels. Brazil saw 209.2 million passengers, while Mexico recorded 185.8 million, with a higher volume of international passengers in Mexico (58.4 million) compared to Brazil (21.9 million).

Passenger Traffic: Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX) in Mexico City led with 48,415,693 passengers, about 26% of Mexico's total traffic. Buenos Aires International Airport (EZE) experienced the largest increase, up 44%. Brazil's top airports, including Guarulhos (GRU) and Congonhas (CGH), combined for 112,898,238 passengers, roughly 54% of Brazil's traffic.

Air Cargo Traffic: El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogotá topped cargo volumes with 758,180 tons. Quito International Airport (UIO) had the highest growth rate at 14.12%. The decline in cargo at three major Mexican airports is attributed to cargo flights being redirected to Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU) since its 2022 opening.

Aircraft Movements: Mexico City International Airport (MEX) led with 363,450 movements. Jorge Newberry Airport (AEP) in Buenos Aires saw the highest percentage increase, growing by 22.24%.
