Canada Launches New Skills-Based "Sector Visas" to Replace Traditional Permits
As of this morning, Canada has officially transitioned to a more flexible, skills-based immigration system, phasing out many traditional, employer-specific work permits.
This landmark reform allows foreign workers to hold sector-based authorizations, granting them the freedom to move between different approved employers within the same industry without needing to reapply for a new visa.
The move is designed to address critical labor shortages while providing greater mobility and protection for international talent.
In addition to the worker reforms, the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) has implemented new rules for international students.
Starting today, those enrolled in master’s or doctoral programs at public Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) are exempt from submitting provincial attestation letters.
This streamlined process aims to attract high-level researchers and experts to the Canadian innovation economy, solidifying the country’s reputation as a top-tier global education destination.
