Acapulco Hotels Report Best Occupancy in Seven Years

Acapulco is coming off one of its most successful winters ever, the Guerrero tourism secretary revealed this week.

The destination reported average hotel occupancy of 83.5 percent for the period between Dec. 20, 2015 and Dec. 31, 2015. What's more, the tourism office said hotels routinely reported occupancy rates higher than 97 percent over the course of December 2015.

On Jan. 1, the popular Mexican resort destination registered the highest occupancy on record in the past seven years at 98 percent. That figure was up significantly from 95.9 percent recorded on the same day in 2015.

"For the first time in many years, we have seen a continuously high occupancy throughout the winter season with 16 days of over 80 percent hotel occupancy in the State of Guerrero," Guerrero tourism secretary Ernesto Rodriguez Escalona said in a statement.

Acapulco was joined by Taxco and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo in experiencing an incredibly successful December. Together the destinations welcomed 900,000 tourists who contributed $150 million in economic impact.

The figures smashed records from the past seven years. Acapulco's prolific December was highlighted by a slew of performances at Mega Feria Mundo Imperial 2015 and a holiday parade attended by more than 300,000 people.

The impressive visitor marks have set a new bar for the beloved beach destination's hotel industry and have resulted in mighty expectations for 2016.
