Bahamas, Sandals Exuma Officials to Meet Again to Discuss Resort’s Struggles

Bahamas tourism officials will meet with officials at the Sandals Emerald Bay resort in Great Exuma this week to discuss ways to boost business for the struggling resort, said Obie Wilchcombe, the Bahamas’ minister of tourism. Perry Christie, the Bahamas’ prime minster, said recently that Great Exuma’s economy was threatened because the resort, which is the island’s largest private employer with 600 workers, was in danger of closing.

No final decision has been made on how the government will help the hotel, said Wilchcombe, but the Christie administration will work to get more tourists to the island, he said. “Obviously we have to put more money into Exuma for more marketing to ensure that not only Sandals benefits, but the entire island,” said Wilchcombe in an interview with the Nassau Guardian.  

Sandals officials recently described the cost of operating the resort as “unsustainable,” prompting the meetings with government officials to discuss a “prompt and creative approach to ensure sustainability.”
