Belize’s Popular Ramon’s Village Resort Set to Fully Reopen in December
Ramon’s Village Resort on San Pedro Island in Belize will be fully operational by Dec. 20, according to town officials quoted in local media reports. The resort was gutted in an August fire that also disrupted electrical power across the island.
Following the blaze, the resort has continued operation of 40 cabanas and a beachside restaurant that were undamaged in the fire, along with the property’s on-site tour operation. Belize’ fire department in September attributed the fire to an electrical malfunction in one of the cabanas.
A fire department official warned that fast-developing San Pedro must factor public safety into local development decisions. “The hydrant system on the island is not one that can support a large fire of that magnitude,” said Orin Smith, lead fire investigator. “And although the island is surrounded by water, development impedes access to the water sources. Any development should involve input from the fire department.”
