Brazil Ministry of Tourism Launches Hotel Rating System

Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism (MTur) has partnered with its National Institute of Industrial Metrology and Quality (Inmetro) to launch a Brazilian System for the Qualification of Accommodation Options (SBClass) that will provide accommodation ratings for visitors, said MTur officials.
The system uses stars, in increments from one to five, to identify each type of accommodation. Use of this symbol will be exclusive to organizations that have completed MTur’s qualification process.
“Foreign tourists will be able to count on one more precious information element when choosing Brazil as a destination,” said Mário Moysés, president of the Brazilian Tourism Board (Embratur). “With better quality information we become more competitive in the international market.”

The rankings feature seven types of accommodations -- hotels, resorts, farm-hotels, bed and breakfasts, historic hotels, inns and flat/apartment hotels. Brazil will host the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament in 2014 and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games 2016.
