Close to 25,000 new hotel rooms are in the hotel development pipeline in the Caribbean and Mexico, including 7,974 set to open in 2014, according to new data from Smith Travel Research (STR).

As of December, there were 152 hotels totaling 24,487 rooms in the region following the opening of 18 hotels and 3,617 rooms in 2013.

The total active pipeline includes projects in final planning stages and under construction, STR said.

A total of 48 hotels and 7,974 rooms are set to open in the region this year, with the majority in the unaffiliated segment.

The luxury segment is expected to see the most growth this year, STR said, with 1,755 new rooms in seven hotels, followed by 1,640 rooms in 15 hotels in the upper midscale segment.
