Jamaica, Singapore Ink Open Skies Agreement

Jamaica and Singapore have signed an open skies agreement (OSA) which will allow some airlines to fly freely between the two countries. The deal was signed on behalf of the Jamaican government by minister without portfolio in the ministry of transport, works and housing, Dr. Morais Guy, in London on November 25.

Under the OSA, selected airlines can fly between Jamaica and Singapore, even via third countries, without limitations in the frequency of flights, capacity and the type of aircraft.

At the signing Guy noted, “The agreement represents a sustained and coordinated expansion in Jamaica’s transportation sector, particularly as it relates to aviation, which will translate into increased potential for transportation, commerce and tourism between the two countries.”

For his part, Singapore’s transport minister Lui Tuck Yew, who signed on behalf of his country said, “The signing of the OSA reflects the warm bilateral ties between Singapore and Jamaica, and underscores both countries’ commitment to establish a fully liberal air services framework which allows our carriers to react quickly to market demand when opportunities arise.”

Both ministers inked on the sidelines of 28th International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly in London. Guy is leading a delegation to the assembly, which is expected to bolster Jamaica’s bid to be re-elected to the IMO Council (Category C) for a two-year period. The Council is the governing body of the organization.

The IMO is the United Nations specialized agency responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of pollution by ships. It has 170 members and 3 associate members.
